Our Journey So Far…

We began our whole school journey, to reimagine what learning in the junior years (Year 3 - 6) could look and feel like, almost 3 years ago. We knew it could be just as inclusive, engaging and independence driven as the early years.

So, we made some big changes:

No more 30 tables and chairs…
Instead:

Small, intentional focus groups.
Meaningful independence.
Enhanced learning zones.
Playful learning opportunities.
Flexible seating.
Wellbeing at the centre of it all.

Classroom Environments

Video tour of a Year 6 classroom including 5 learning zones, a carpet space, flexible seating and a calm, inclusive atmosphere.

The physical changes had to happen early in the journey so that we could begin implementing the new approach. Teachers set about creating calm, intentional spaces, establishing five learning zones (STEM Zone, Reading and Research, Creative Zone, Digital Zone, and Maths Zone) with flexible seating options.

Developing the classroom atmosphere was a key part of this process: soft furnishings improved classroom acoustics, plants brought nature indoors and the use of lamps and low-level lighting introduced a sense of calm. No more burning headaches from harsh overhead lights!

Our junior classrooms are now designed for movement, choice and comfort, because we know that learning doesn’t look the same for every child. From wobble stools to floor cushions, these spaces empower our children to find where they focus best, collaborate more confidently with their peers and take ownership of their learning.
